Too Late Hero VHS

A great film of a small unit patrol going deep into the jungle without anyone but itself to rely on. The scene where their ambush is poorly executed from both sides of the trail resulting in a friendly casualty shows how indeed the "small things" do matter. Its interesting that it shows the dilemma of a deep patrol in regards to its wounded---leave them to their own end or carry them and slow the whole patrol down and risk its survival? A tough question and one yet to be addressed in our military by employing simple mobility devices like backpacks that convert to carts, using all-terrain bikes etc. In contrast today we just want sensors to do it, but as the film shows they can't see through overhead jungle vegetation, so bombing-from-the-air-is-not-the-answer-to-everything.
The ending where the 2 men criss-cross running across and open field shows how marksmanship and weapons ranges are important, what's troubling is the base camp didn't have a reaction force ready to maneuver back in to extract the patrol survivors out, choosing to just support-by-fire at a safe distance. GOOD leadership will risk itself to save the men.

Flawless

This is a clever, engaging story, beautifully portrayed by Demi Moore and Michael Caine. It's a movie about a diamond heist that doesn't rely on car chases or explosions. I really enjoyed this film, and it's a great Michael Caine DVD for your collection.

The Man Who Would Be King

My best Michael Caine DVD.They don't make 'em like this anymore. A brilliant adaption of Rudayard Kipling's saga of two ne' er well former British soldiers left behind in India. They are leading a life of con games when the happen upon another fellow Mason Christopher Plummer as Rudyard Kipling.
The rest is pure adventure as Connery and Caine search for a lost city of jewels across land never traveled by any "outsider" since Alexander the Great. This is a must see if you ever wish to see Micahel Caine and Sean Connery teamed with John Huston's wonderful film.

Secondhand Lions

Another great Michael Caine DVD.This movie is very much a 'feel good' movie. However, it is a movie that has a great story line and moving plot.

Duvall and Caine are brothers who own a run down house and barn on several acres of land in Texas. Osment is dumped off at these two men's place by his mother, who quickly informs him that these are his great uncles and they have millions stashed away somewhere on their land. Of course, every living relative attempts to get to their money, and these men want nothing but to be left alone. So Osment's showing up merely alienates him from these men he has never even met nor heard of until he gets left at their place.

Throughout the course of the film, we find out that these two brothers have been accused of being Mafia hit men who stole all that money from Al Capone in the thirties, or that these two men were actually notorious bank robbers who stole all their money and now have it hidden on their place. However, we also find out, after Caine befriends Osment, that these two men were actually action adventurers who went over to Europe just before the first world war and stayed one step ahead of the Germans, until they were shanghaied into the French Foreign legion.

Caine describes to Osment throughout the film all the adventures that he and his brother had in Europe douring the past forty years that they were 'missing.' However, we as the audience do not know the truth about these two men until the very end.

The story of the film is very well developed, it flows well, and in many parts is so funny your gut will hurt from laughing. The DVD box indicates that this film is rated PG for language. However, the language is very mild and my wife and I (since we have nieces and nephews) notices only the words 'Damn' and 'Dammit' on about three or four occasions. Otherwise, the film is very clean.

This is a wonderful movie and good fun for the whole family, I highly recommend it.

The Quiet American

Vietnam. It makes me think of war.
But even before Americans got involved, the Vietnamese were fighting the French for independence. And it was Ho Chi Minh and the Communists who were actively doing the fighting.
It was the early 1950s though, years before the Americans got involved.
Or was it?
This film answers that question.
And yet, there is a lot more to the story than just the politics.
It is about an aging British journalist, played by Michael Caine. He's been in Vietnam for years and loves it. He has a wife somewhere in England who he hasn't seen in years and will not divorce him. And he has a gorgeous young Vietnamese woman, Do Hai Yen, who he's been living with for several years. The arrangement works for both of them.
But things change. A quiet American, played by Brendan Fraser enters the picture. He says he's an aid worker. And he befriends Michael Caine.
But what is the American's REAL purpose in Vietnam? Questions start to surface. Especially when the American declares his love for Caine's woman.
In the meantime a war is going on. Caine and Fraser almost get killed. And then there is a horrible explosion in the middle of the city.
There's death all around. And love. And a sense of place so well captured by the director, Phillip Noyce, that I could almost feel the Vietnam of the 1950's all around me.
The story moved fast, and the plot revealed details that changed the reality of what things seemed at first. And it was all done so well that all I could do was sit there, watch the screen, and let it all unfold.
The film was supposed to be released in September 2001, shortly after 9/11. However, the filmmakers chose to hold on to it until 2002. When you see it, the reason will become startlingly clear.

Zulu

One of my all time favorite Michael Caine Dvds.Zulu is arguably one of the best movies ever made. Stanley Baker and Michael Caine are the main stars in this true story. The main reason why I liked the film is because of the battle scenes. Furthermore, the character development was excellent and the acting by Caine, Baker as well as the extras playing as Zulu warriors were superb. In short, if you like war movies, this is a MUST buy but if you prefer romantic ones, stay clear of this.

This DVD version is in widescreen format.

Play Dirty

This has to be one of the most cynical war movies ever made, and those who devalue this movie as a knock-off of The Dirty Dozen overlook the way that movie still romanticizes heroism while Play Dirty will have none of it. From the opening scene of Play Dirty, where an officer's corpse is returned likely shot by the man returning it, there's no sentimentality here, no acts of stunning bravery, just a bunch of schmoes who don't even much like one another trying to stay alive. This movie presents war as a sort of lazy grand incompetence that occasionally awakens to explosion, warfare, murder, and rape. While the supporting cast of outlaws seem very B-movie (like those guys who talk in dub in a Sergio Leone western), Caine and Davenport more than make up for it. The desert photography and scenery is outstanding -- not Lawrence of Arabia pretty but rather the third enemy that threatens to sandblast them right off the screen throughout the film. Some find desert scenes slow; I find them the mesmerizing. And Play Dirty remains my favorite war film of all time. It's the only war movie I know that never lies even once.
A great Michael Caine DVD.

The Eagle Has Landed

This is one of the best war movies ever made, and put to DVD. The film is based on the Jack Higgins novel were a crack team of German paratroops try to kidnap Winston Churchill why he is staying at a country house in Norfolk. The plot is perhaps a little thin but the action moves along at a fast and furious pace! It also has a great cast which includes Donald Sutherland, Michael Caine and Robert Duvall. If you are a fan of Jack Higgins buy this movie now!

Get Carter

It's great news to finally be able to get "Get Carter" on DVD. Get Carter is an incredible film, one of the best of 1970's, that stars Michael Caine as "Carter" in probably his greatest performance, and is directed by Mike Hodges, which is his greatest film as well. This film may be one of the more brutally violent films that has ever been made, even by today's standards, which is amazing considering that it was made 30 years ago. It's about a mob henchman that goes on a quest for revenge when his brother is killed under suspicious circumstances. On his journey Carter encounters plenty of sex and violence. There are many memorable scenes in this movie including one of the most raw, brutal killing scenes that I have ever scene in which he stabs a former friend whom he suspects betrayed him. This movie is action packed, but not the mindless, loud, explosion-filled action of today's movies. The violence is both shocking and disturbing, however, there's a heavy price to pay. This movie will leave you dazed after finishing viewing. I highly recommend this movie to everyone with even a casual interest in great films, and is a must own for DVD collectors.

Jack The Ripper

Watched it the other night for the first time in about 10 years and it was just as good as I remembered. Michael Caine is excellent as Abberline as he works his way through a large list of suspects and red herrings to come to a somewhat plausible, if not original conclusion. Based on the performances and atmosphere, I still think this remains as good a Ripper movie as they've ever done. "From Hell" was more flashy, and was still good, but this is your classic "whodunit" involving Jack the Ripper.

The made to order DVD was also excellent and it a very good way to get more obscure movies into the hands of fans who have waited indefinitely to see them released mass market.

The Italian Job

A wonderful action movie set during 1969 Italy and England. This movie is actually better than the remake. When I first heard that someone had finished making the remake, I tried to find a copy of the original. I remembered seeing it on TV years ago and that it was a great show. The music in the original is super and true to the era. What makes this movie great is the Minis ofcourse, but also Michael Caine. I bought the original. Too bad they never made the sequel that had orginally been planned. A great DVD for your Michael Caine collection.

Without A Clue

I must first say that there is no excuse for any DVD to be released without the film being available in widescreen format. Shame on the distributors for skimping.

That said, this is an absolute joy.
I suspect the idea for the film came from watching Remington Steele, because the premise is about identical, but here it is perfected. Ben Kingsley's performance as the put-upon and rigidly proper Watson is flawless. Michael Caine has a great talent for playing the aloof genius, and also for playing the colossal moron. He doubles the talent by switching from one extreme to the other in the blink of an eye.
And Paul Freeman perfects a sublimely sinister portrayal of Moriarty (no, not Arty Morty). From just watching the film without looking up the name, who would have caught that this was the evil French anti-Indy from "Raiders of the Lost Ark"?

The only negative I might say about the movie is Jeffrey Jones' badly affected accent, but who cares? His performance as Lestrade is fun to watch with some sympathy - he's aware that Holmes is faking it but never quite able to nail it down with any proof, even to himself.

This is a fun, intelligent movie, and I suppose that's its own downfall.
This movie was one of so many sad cases that show how the best movies tend to get pathetic marketing behind them, just because they don't cater to the lowest common denominator.

Harry Brown

I really liked this movie. It reminded me of the "Death Wish" movie with Charles Bronson.

An older man takes on crime in his neighborhood.Lots of action, drama, and suspence in this one.

I really loved this movie, and hope there is a sequal.
